Dye experiment with Hypholomas - Lahokasvärjäystä

Experimented with mushroom dyeing again. This time with Hypholomas. Supposedly they give yellow/ brown shades of colour. Still - I was a bit surprised in the end.

I used the same method as before - made the dyebath by boiling the mushrooms for little over an hour. Let the brew cool down and then sieved the solid particles out. Brought temperature of the dyebath up to 40degrees centigrade - then removed the yarn and added mordants (10% alum and 5% cream of tartar) and stirred well. Added yarns and let the temperature rise to a bit over 80degrees centigrade (so that it is not boiling, but very close....) Let the yarn soak in dye bath while maintaining the +80degrees temperature for an hour and some. Then turned the flame off and let yarn cool in the dyebath until completely cool.

Rinsed in lukewarm water with a gulp of vinegar and then rinsed until the water was clear.

The surprise was not so much the pale colour but the change in shade. When I took yarns out of dyebath they were mustard yellow. Really brownish in shade. But almost all brown came off to the rinse water and what was left is really adorable yellow. It is not quite the correct shade in the photo - in real life it is more saturated and warmer yellow. The skeins behind it are from after dye. ( tried to get the remainder of the dye into these skeins when I had already completed the 1st dyeing round with the skein in front. As you can see - no much colour in those skeins)

Leasson learned : the colour of the dyebath and the colour of the yarn directly coming out of dyebath has nothing to do with the colour that stays in yarn! (btw. I absolutely adore the result of this dyeing experiment. Really nice colour!)
